Owning & Restoring the Lighthouse
The Toledo Harbor Lighthouse Society filed an application to own the lighthouse on September 20, 2005. On October 5, 2006, the Secretary of the Interior approved the Toledo Harbor Lighthouse Preservation Society application for ownership. A lift dock and ramp were installed in October 2008. The lift and dock were gone sometime between April 9 and April 11, 2009 because the US Coast Guard left the dock down so a northeastern took the dock. The first phase of the restoration will be let for contract early in 2019 with construction in 2019. This project tucks the brick and puts in doors and first-story windows at a total estimated cost of $638,000. This was funded by a $500,000 grant for transportation historical structures from the Ohio Department of Transportation that administers this grant for the Federal Highway Administration through TMACOG. Lucas County is the local sponsor, and the Toledo Lighthouse Society paid the $138,000 match. The match was paid by donations, fund raising and a loan. The estimated cost for the full restoration project is $2.5 million. The $102,000 cost to Duket Architects for the plans and specifications was paid with a $48,000 Ohio Coastal Zone Management Grant and a $14,900 Lake Erie Protection Fund Grant, with the remainder from the Toledo Lighthouse Society.
